Just in time for the film's 20th anniversary, we look at its biggest flubs.
The Directors Didn't Know What They Wanted
Reports from on the set of Super Mario Bros. indicated that neither Morton nor Jankel had any idea of what kind of film they wanted to make. They were reportedly damn near impossible to work with, making decisions that would cause filming to stretch on and the budget to get out of control the way it did. At one point, they were even removed from the set because things were going nowhere fast with them on it. Hopper said at one point, "It was a husband-and-wife directing team who were both control freaks and wouldn't talk before they made decisions."
Plus, the idea that Luigi is so much younger than Mario -- and the film did such a poor job explaining as such -- just really made you wonder what the directors might have been thinking. Not to mention the fact that Leguizamo is hardly, um, Luigi-esque. He didn't even say "MAMA MIAAAA!"
It should be noted that neither director found steady work in Hollywood following Super Mario Bros.' failure. That's a good thing, folks…
