Just in time for the film's 20th anniversary, we look at its biggest flubs.
The Questionability of the Devo Gun
While we're talking about badly used items in the movie, we have to bring up the Devo Gun. Here's a device that looks pretty dang accurate when it comes to pointing and shooting at a target, but the range is way off. At one point, Dennis Hopper is able to fire it at a politician about 20-30 yards out and turn him into a monkey, but when he tries to shoot Mario at close range, it can only hit the tiny mushroom he's holding.
Granted, weapon use isn't Super Mario's best forte anyway, since Hopper's flame-shooting gun goes out during the finale, and then he's magically able to fire it again (guess he found a lighter). And…well, the Bob-Omb is pretty bad, and apparently capable of sticking to surfaces with its tiny feet. But that Devo Gun…it probably would've worked a lot better if the creators figured out some sort of range on it.
But then again, Mario easily defeated a bunch of Goombas using a screwdriver in the tunnel. He's not exactly up against a greater evil.
