Interceptor Entertainment's first-person shooting throwback is a must for those seeking that "classic" challenge.
What you'll have to accept with Rise of the Triad is that it's still ridiculously hard. When you first start the game up, you may not be able to sense it right away, mainly because the AI can be a little half-baked. But just wait. About a half hour in or so, the madness really sets in, and soon you're running for your life, picking up any weapons and power-ups you can get your hands on.
Part of the challenge comes from the sporadically placed checkpoints, which was probably done on purpose by the original developers. After all, a meaty game like this can't live up to its name unless it has players repeatedly trying to reach that crucial point. Some people may not be able to look past this, but the dedicated know it's worth fighting for.
The gameplay is typical run-and-gun, and it works when it's in this mode, as you can blast enemies to bloody chunks with a great deal of accuracy. However, it would've been nice to have less platforming, because, let's be honest – in first-person, it's near impossible to get those pinpoint jumps going. You'll get it after some practice, but swear up and down as you do so, desiring to get back to the shooting.
