Resident Evil 6: The Series, Like Its Characters, Should Remain Dead

The death throes of a gaming titan.

Many people, myself included have long been following the story of the Umbrella Corporation for years, back when it all started in an abandoned mansion in field. Those tense moments as you walk through desolate manor hallways, low on health, and not even having enough ammunition to fill a magazine. Then when you are just about turn a corner, nerves on edge, the windows shatter in a cacophonous sound and you are immediately swarmed by undead hounds. Sadly those moments simply cannot exist in the primary Resident Evil series any longer as Capcom has chosen to neuter the series and now Resident Evil 6 focuses on a ridiculous story full of over the top mindless action. Needless to say I am not a fan of this decision.

Resident Evil 6 is a great example of why you shouldn't try to change a series to appeal to everyone because you almost always end up with a product that doesn't really appeal to anyone. For example Resident Evil has always had lackluster controls, in the PS1 era this was completely acceptable as the dualshock controller wasn't even introduced yet and tank controls make a lot of sense in a 3D environment. Resident Evil 4 was a step in the right direction for modernizing the controls but that was still wonky, Resident Evil 5 should have improved the controls but didn't because it was too busy being the downfall of the series and now we have Resident Evil 6 that has zero excuses as to why it's controls should be so mediocre. Resident Evil: Racoon City had better controls (though it wasn't a great game by any means) you would think after pouring millions of dollars into a game you would at least make the aiming be snappy enough to quickly target both flying and crawling targets and the movement shouldn't still, after 16 years, control like a tank. Archaic controls aside, Capcom has ditched the creepy atmosphere for a goofy action series, and it a subpar one at that. Also, like in Resident Evil 5, you have a constant NPC companion, (except for one campaign, which I'll get to in a minute.). This ever present "buddy" character completely kills any possible tense situations.
