We take a trip to Lincoln with Joel and Ellie. Find out more in our preview.
Exploration is one of the keys to survival in The Last Of Us. Exploring the world gives allows you to find supplies that can be fashioned into weapons and first aid kits. Items have the familiar shimmer that treasures had in the Uncharted series that make them easy to spot. As Joel and Ellie examine the forest, a unique feature reveals itself. Joel and Ellie speak to each other throughout gameplay. The phrases, at least in the demo, are never repeated but are contextual to the current situation or environment. Ellie adds a sweetness to the madness as she states that this is her first time in a forest since she grew up in a quaritine zone.
Ellie brings a sweetness to the terror of the game.
The infection began to spread 20 years ago, 6 years before Ellie was born. Living in a quartine zone is all she has ever known which creates an interesting relationship between her character and Joel. This leads to many valuable conversations and interactions that adds an authentic context to the game. Ellie reacts as a sheltered teenager would and Joel is there to provide guidance and advice.
Could Naughty Dog be hiding a message on this sign?
Once Joel and Ellie reach a set of buildings in the distance, Joel must use a board to create a bridge between two buildings. It is on the roof of one of the buildings that Joel finds a vicious melee weapon. It is a pipe with a pair of scissors taped to the end. This was our first introduction to weapon crafting within the game. Weapons can be upgraded to perform one time, one hit kills. Weapons will also deplete and break. Once Joel grabbed the weapon he made his way across the building and to a new set of dilapidated structures. It is here that we were introuduced to bricks and bottles which can be used to distract enemies. It is also where we were introduced to an infected enemy.
