Check out Kudzu in this episode of Chichuki Views!
Another day, another Chichuki Views episode. This time, we're looking at Kudzu from the folks at 8 Bit Legit/Mega Cat Studios. If you're a fan of classic Game Boy games, then this one is going to be for you. Max, the main character, is an apprentice gardener on the island and his teacher, Zoen, has disappeared. You discover that Zoen has made his way into the Kudzu field and that's no good because of all the monsters in there. You will have to explore all over the place and find tools/items to help you on your quest. The machete early on will help survival too. An issue I had was using the machete because you have to get really close to enemies to hit them. So much so that it feels like you have to walk on top of them and attack at the same time. That being said, this gives the game an even bigger shot of nostalgia because it being a little unforgiving gives it that classic charm.
I mentioned earlier that fans of classic Game Boy games will be in heaven with Kudzu. For starters, the color scheme of the game is that Game Boy Green that everyone loves. It also has a fun cast of characters and they look like they could be put into Link's Awakening and fit right in. The theme of gardening is an interesting touch because it adds a lot to the game. You have to use garden tools as items and weapons to get through your journey. Figuring out how to use Kudzu vines to open doors/switches feels very satisfying. The idea of collecting goats to eat grass is great too. I found myself wanting to locate all the goats and will probably do that when I go back to the game in my spare time.
The folks and 8 Bit Legit and Mega Cat Studios have the whole retro with modern feel down and have hit another one out of the park with Kudzu!
