Zombies as far as the eye can see!

It's that time again for a new episode of Chichuki Plays, the show where I go hands-on with upcoming games and show them off. Usually, it's about an hour or so but I don't want to spoil too much of the game for you. This time, we're looking at Whisper Mountain Outbreak on Steam.

Fans of horror/survival horror games will feel right at home with Whisper Mountain Outbreak. It’s 1998; a mining operation on Mt. Bisik inadvertently unleashed an ancient horror when they disturbed a ruin buried deep inside the mountain. People started hearing whispers and seeing monsters when a mysterious fog suddenly appeared and covered the area surrounding the mountain. Now, it is your duty as an agent of BRIM (Bureau of Research & Investigation of Metaphysics) to investigate and eradicate the paranormal and otherworldly threats.

The game was giving off Chibi Resident Evil vibes to me and it also reminded me of recent game Crow Country in terms of the graphical styling.

You'll be able to pick what role you play for the mission before it starts. You might be a Fireman, a Medic, or Security Guard just to name a few. Each character has its strengths and weaknesses and it will help to learn them quickly. For example the Fireman attacks with an axe but has terrible aim with firearms. I'm not great with dual stick aiming with a controller so I went Fireman when I had the chance. I also love the fact that you can modify the look/sound of your character. One run I was a tough guy who plays by his own rules, and another I was a cool girl with red hair, blue clothes and kicks ass. Just because zombies killed her doesn't me she doesn't kick ass.

The hub area before you go out on missions allows you to change the look of your character. It also allows you to craft items for the quest, purchase items and practice using weapons. There's a shooting range and test dummies set up for you to wail on with the weapon you have. The locations aren't too big but will feel massive when the zombie outbreaks occur. They happen a couple times and it feels like they occur just when you think you have a handle on things. The first location has your party finding gems to unlock a door which houses a fuse needed to power the area. The gems are very small and you might miss them the first time through a room. There are doors that you will have to use a lock pick on to open. The lock pick mini game is a pain because the controls are a little finicky. You also have an inventory for items and weapons. In classic survival horror fashion, the inventory is WAY too small and you will have to discard items to grab better ones.

You can also combine items like health herbs to make better healing items as well as bullets into your gun. As I mentioned earlier, you will want to have a handle on things like items and ammo because the zombies could over take you very quickly and you won't want to run out of supplies. There is also a stamina bar that depletes when you run or do something exhausting like swinging an axe or bat. That will come into play when there is a large group of enemies near you because if you run out of stamina, you can't run, and that's when the zombies get ya! To recap, fans of the survival horror genre will want to check out Whisper Mountain Outbreak as it pays homage to the genre very well.
