What are the challenges of developing for Android devices today? How does NVIDIA help with this?
As in my previous answer, the challenge of developing for Android devices today is that there are so many differences in screen-resolutions, hardware, specifications, texture formats. NVIDIA is changing that by setting a standard for Android. If you got Tegra3 from NVIDIA, you know good, quality games will run: It's a simple as that. No visual artifacts, no crashes, but only smooth, reliable performance and displaying state of the art graphics that are designed with - and properly tested on Tegra3. If you don't have Tegra3, you'll never know if the games you want to play will run on your specific device. Will the developers have thought of your specific device? Will they support the features only your device has? How will they ever be capable of getting the best out of your device if they don't even know what device you have?
Can you talk about the gameplay experience and how consoles have inspired you?
Consoles are an inspiration for us, because the graphics and gameplay we were able to get on Tegra 3 are so similar compared to high end consoles such as Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3. The polygon detail for cars and characters for example, or the shaders we are using, or even the high density of foliage everywhere: it's something only high-end consoles were able to do, but are now visible on paper-thin tablets.
What were your goals heading into this game?
With this game, our intention was to make it our flagship: Our best work on tablet/mobile gaming market so far, pushing the limits in every way and competing with arcade / console games. Flatout Stuntman could also run on PSN or XBLA, but it runs on Tegra 3. The level of perfection (and fun while testing) that Team6 put in Flatout Stuntman is really high.
Besides quality, our goal was to make a game that can last very long: Therefore it's stuffed with so much (and low priced, so everyone can enjoy it) content so the people who enjoyed this very addictive, violent and fun base concept can play this game for months, hopefully even years. We just hope people will appreciate what we did for the game, and we will be able to design and create much more content for a long while.
What does your title bring new to the genre?
Flatout Stuntman does not really fit in any genre: it is a combined of various genres, from typical racing to Angry Birds though the original Flatout Stuntman mode is much older than Angry Birds, of course.
Can you talk about the story and the game universe?
Flatout Stuntman is a series of Stunt events: Race towards your launch location, eject, and hit enough score objects or inflect enough physical damage to your character to become number one in the highscore list. Few people will have the skills and patience to win that precious gold medal for every location. Combine and tinker with various characters, vehicles and environments to score maximum points. Anything that requires a driver, from car to sled and from tank to tractor: it's there. Over 30 vehicles, 30 characters and over 30 locations divided in six themes are yours to try.
