Not much has changed in some modes, but the new additions to gameplay – and Path To Greatness – are welcome.
One new addition to the mix is Path To Greatness, which is similar to the Michael Jordan mode introduced in NBA 2K11. This time around, though, it focuses on LeBron James, the shooting star for the Miami Heat. In this interesting new mode, you can either guide him on a continuing championship run with the Heat, or direct him elsewhere – like back to the Cavaliers, or even the Knicks. It's an interesting change of pace, though you may not get much mileage out of it if you're not a LeBron fan. Cleveland, you know who you are.
Where NBA 2K14 finds its stride is with its gameplay. There are new dribble types and moves you can use on the court to help get you closer to the basket, and the defensive game is as strong as it's ever been, especially when it comes to shot blocking. Serving up someone with a facial – stopping just short of a foul – is a sweet thing, indeed. The gameplay feels terrific, whether you're going with analog stick shooting or the good ol' button system – it's nice to have it both ways. The skip in animations could cause you to lose the ball every once in a while, but overall, it feels just like basketball should.
While some of the modes remain unchanged and a couple of things could use smoothing over, NBA 2K14 continues to be a dominating sports brand for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Considering its progress, it'll have no problem dominating in the next-gen market as well. NBA Live, you've got work to do…
