Not much has changed in some modes, but the new additions to gameplay – and Path To Greatness – are welcome.
Every year, 2K Sports scores a slam dunk with its basketball games, mainly because Visual Concepts – a team that has been working on them since the Dreamcast glory days over a decade ago – knows how to dial in the sport just about right. Sure, on occasion, there's been a hiccup or two with certain decisions to the game, but overall, it's managed to get down the vibe that's oh-so-true to the sport.
This year is no exception, though there is some pressure on 2K this time around. EA Sports is finally getting off its laurels and preparing to enter the next-generation with the return of its NBA Live franchise, meaning that NBA 2K14 has to perform even better than years beforehand. So…now that's it out, does it? The answer is absolutely.
Granted, there are some things that could still use some addressing with this version. While the animations aren't anything to scoff at, there are times that the transitions can skip a mild bit. But that still doesn't take away from the fact that this is as good as a basketball game can look, between wild crowds, beautiful arena details (the lighting on the hardwood floors remains a highlight) and the fluid animations. The replays are fun as well.
