A reboot of classic adventure game Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards: Reloaded shows it may be time to stop the Viagra and retire the long running series
Backdrops and atmosphere are vibrant and stylized to make the city of Lost Wages feel alive despite minimal movement, with the character design remaining cartoony but fresh. Although with a graphical update like this, it makes you wonder why the developers decided to skip out on animating a lot of the actions to go along with what Larry does, for instance if you go to give someone a rose the narrator will just explain it to you rather than show the actual action. A small gripe that is most likely in place for nostalgic and imaginative purposes.
Despite the vulgar humour still remaining delectably trashy and funny even today, this is where Leisure Suit Larry Reloaded’s high points end. Money is an important part of Larry’s adventure in that he needs to use it to travel between areas or to buy things, but the only way to make money is by gambling and this is where possibly the game’s biggest flaw comes to the forefront. If you run out of money then you will be taken pity on by a homeless man who will give you some change to try again, but by having gambling be the only source of income is archaic and downright tedious at times since you will most likely need to money-grind in order to continue on with the game.
What the game does get right however is its ability to bring a modern classic into the 21st century by giving a few minor add-ons like an Angry Birds style minigame, a new girl to pursue and new scenes, but unless you’re a longtime fan of the series it’s hard to convince yourself to keep playing around the poor design and lackluster gameplay. Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards: Reloaded is currently available on Steam for $19.99.
