With some interesting moral decisions and plenty of enemies to kill, Keiji Inafune's latest is a must-have for Vita owners.
Gameplay can be repetitive over the course of the game, but the sacrificial angle really plays out well, to the point that you really won't mind. Customization also goes a long way, even if some particular items and outfits take a great deal of time to find. That just adds to the replay value, though.
For a real breakaway from Mega Man territory, Keiji and his team at Comcept have done a bang-up job with the graphics. There are times draw-in distance can be questionable, along with the quality of the cinemas, but the fantasy world designed here is dark, decadent and well worth exploring. The animations are great too, and little things, like you sacrificing some of your body, really have an effect on in-game combat. This is a good looking effort for the Vita.
In terms of audio, you've got a killer soundtrack that keeps up with all the in-game action without missing a beat, and plenty of battle effects. However, we could've done with less chatter from our AI partners. Yes, you're helping us. We get it. Shut up.
Even with its shortcomings in combat and teammate resurrection, Soul Sacrifice is a great addition to your PS Vita library, especially if you've got fellow Monster Hunter-like players that can join in the fun. Keiji Inafune has really come a long way since departing from Capcom, and you have to wonder just what kind of creative ace he has up his sleeve now that this is wrapped up. Whatever it is, we'd give an arm and a leg for it. But not our eyes, sorry...
