Chase McCain is back in Lego City to take down Rex Fury but he needs your help. Will you be there to lend him a helping hand in cleaning up the underbelly of Lego City?
The game also has customizable features to it, such as being able to change the appearance of your disguises which Chase has to wear to allow him to perform certain skills. The same could be said about the open world map and allowing the player to basically go wherever they would like to go in Lego City. There is so much to find that the game has to allow going wherever you want in the city. The way they make you play the story is to unlock the different disguises that you need to perform certain abilities, which gets to be a pain in the beginning when you find a ton of places that tell you that the ability is locked and you need to unlock the disguise to do it. It gets a little repetitive at times when you find yourself smashing the same things over and over again to collect the pieces needed to build a “super-build” location like the bridge to the dojo or an area to get vehicles on scene. This isn’t new for Lego games but if you’re not use to the series, this could get old really fast. The mini games are pretty fun like the basketball game in the prison and the weight-lifting game as well but like I said, repetitive. For the size of the game and how much to unlock, you can overlook the feel of repetition and just enjoy the game.
Now with every game, there are good points, such as the game having an open world map and voice actors, as well as low points. I consider Lego City Undercover to have more good points than low points but there are low points. For example, like I previously stated, it feels repetitive at times. You find yourself playing the same level over and over again because you didn’t have the right ability the last time or collecting pieces for that major build you just found out about and need studs for said build. Also the controls feel sticky at times, such as trying to jump off a flag pole or driving. You find yourself trying to make a jump and you land and start sliding for no reason. I found myself stuck between two prisoners and I had to restart the level because there was no escape from where I happened to be stuck. The game is still one of the better games on the Wii U out right now but it just has a few areas that could get on your nerves.
To Conclude, Lego City Undercover is a massive game that will take you quite some time to clear most of the game. You can’t help but like Chase McCain as the main character and you need to bring Rex Fury down. The pop culture references add to an already good game and is right up there with the other Lego games in the series. However there are some low points such as Ellie’s voice for one. The controls stick at times and repetition plays a factor in the game. A game this size, you will just have to deal with repetition and with so much to unlock, you can overlook it. You should be able to get past all that and still have a great time playing Lego City Undercover. Graphics and soundtrack should help you forget all about Ellie’s voice on the Game Pad as well as how good the writing is for this game. The pop culture references and the humor/ charm that comes out of this game is well worth playing it and here’s one that might surprise you, It’s a GOOD game. It might like it’s for the younger generation but don’t let that fool you, Lego City Undercover needs to be played by everyone who has a Wii U.
Score 9/10
A great game but it has a few too many head scratching moments that get on your nerves. Still another gem in the Lego franchise. They have come a long way since the Lego Star Wars games, another good Lego game.
