Chase McCain is back in Lego City to take down Rex Fury but he needs your help. Will you be there to lend him a helping hand in cleaning up the underbelly of Lego City?
Something Nintendo doesn’t do too often is voice acting for the games. They have characters who say things but they don’t have characters who talk the whole game very often. Lego City has the characters speak all their lines as well as text on the screen, which you can choose to have visible or not. The writing is on-par with the rest of the Lego games and is pretty funny at times. One of the better lines is when Chase is talking about not having a stupid phobia and then he sees a talking parrot and is freaked out.
Combine that gem with Rex Fury trying to outrun the cops on a ride-on-lawn mower! That type of material is classic Lego! I would have liked Ellie, one of the main help characters who speaks to the player on the Game Pad, to not have such an annoying southern accent. It gets annoying real fast. I guess you could compare her to Navi, of Zelda 64 fame, by her helpfulness as well as her uncanny ability to be such an annoyance. She communicates with you through the Game Pad which is used to perfection in Lego City. You scan for items and crooks, you use it as a communicator, and you can jump while driving, just to name a few actions the Game Pad can be used for.
Like I’ve said the writing is really good and so is the various references throughout the game to pop culture. Classic scenes from Titanic and Dirty Harry, just to name a few have been spoofed in Lego City and is just another aspect of the game that shows the developers are trying to bring out the best product they can. Combine that with the cop sounding music in the load screens. The load times took way too long in my opinion but at this point, slow load times is what the Wii U in known for. The system update helped that but still in this day and age it shouldn’t take that long to load a game. The soundtrack for the game works well with the theme. You enter the prison and you hear music that really makes you think you’re in a prison. The same could be said for the police station and the load time music. That music makes you think you’re in an old detective movie.
