No big presentation is No Problem for the Big N
The Legend of Zelda and Donkey Kong are two franchises in the Nintendo family that have been there from about the beginning of the company and yet they have gone in different directions. Zelda gained popularity from the classic games in the franchise and continue to build the power of the franchise with hit after hit. Donkey Kong, on the other hand wasn’t making the true powerhouse games that Nintendo was known for until recently when DK got back into the spotlight with Donkey Kong Country Returns and Returns 3D.Both franchises were front and center during the presentation this morning with more information on the Wind Waker HD and to reveal Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze.
The Wind Waker plays just like the Game Cube version except that it’s in gorgeous HD and has the touch screen of the Game Pad to control certain items like the Wind Waker staff. The Wind Waker will be the first Zelda game to show on the Wii U what could be when the highly anticipated Zelda HD game comes out. The inventory menu and the map could be how the Wind Waker is. The game needs a little getting used to but once you do, you feel like there was never a large gap between the last time you played it.
The Big Monkey on campus is getting back into starring roles and going away from games like Donkey Konga, which was fun by the way. Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze could be seen as the sequel to Donkey Kong Country Returns, spiritually. It never is said that it is the sequel but you could pretty much read between the lines. The Island the Kong family calls home has been taken over by Vikings of all things and DK and his pal Diddy have to save the day, once again.
The guys over at RARE are at it again and they felt that their toughest challenge was “ how do we make the game feel different compared to other DK games, like 3D and Returns. They started with the rotating camera and brought swimming back to the DK franchise. Combine that with David Wise, composer from the original DK Country game working on Tropical Freeze and you have a winning formula. In the clip shown at E3, it looked like Dixie Kong was spotted but she wasn’t playable in the demo version. Rare is going all out with this one if they’re bringing Dixie Kong back. If this is the case, who knows what else Rare is bringing back into the DK series. We will just have to wait and see.
