City Living!
It's that time again for a new episode of Chichuki Plays, the show where I go hands-on with upcoming games and show them off. Usually, it's about an hour or so but I don't want to spoil too much of the game for you. This time we're looking at City Hunter on The Nintendo Switch. It's also on Steam but for this video, we're playing the Switch version.
Inspired by the first season of Sunrise’s legendary anime, City Hunter follows Shinjuku, Tokyo’s renowned ‘cleaner,’ Ryo Saeba. In this original side story, he faces off against a sinister megac orporation whose conspiracy threatens the world. It feels like Ryo is a cross between a spy and a detective but has was more to deal with.
You can play City Hunter the way it was initially released in 1990 or play the enhanced version of the game. OR is you're feeling ballsy, take a crack at the hard mode. IN this video I took a stab at all three modes and came away with really liking the enhanced and original modes. The hard mode is just what it says, a tougher mode of the game. Enemies are tougher and it was the only mode where I died in a level.
In each stage, Ryu has someone come to him in their time of need. You could be asked to find someone missing or handle a sticky situation. The first level I played was called "Gone with the Beauty." In it we have a woman worried about her missing boyfriend. She asks us to go into HuG Electronics to see if we can discover what happened to her boyfriend, who made something awful that the company wants.
City Hunter is an interesting game. The levels look similar and it's easy to get lost. In my opinion, explore everywhere because you never know when you'll find the right path. You might need a keycard from one room and then find another person in a separate room that needs a sample. You could get lucky and find a new weapon in one of the other rooms or a healing room. You can get healed by a nurse or a woman in a bunny outfit. OR you can walk in on a naked lady, also used to heal. I have no idea why so many people at their job are either naked or bunny costumed but I digress. Find the Bazooka because it kills most enemies in a few hits and does wonders for the bosses. The guys with flame throwers and knife tossers are a royal pain so anyway to take them down quicker is ok.
I found it tough to turn/change direction quickly. When you enter a room, the moment you leave there is a good chance an enemy is going to show up on top of you so be careful. It was also a pain when you get hit and change direction. I would aim left and the get shot and turn to the right. It really only was a pain when there were quite a few enemies on screen or multiple flamethrowers.
Fans of City Hunter, the anime/original game, will want to check this out. The same could be said for people who are fans of the classic platformer genre. You will be glad you did. Make sure you check out the hands-on video below!
