Interview with a vampire!
It's that time again for a new episode of Chichuki Views, the show where I go hands-on with upcoming games and show them off. Usually it's about an hour or so but I don't want to spoil too much of the game for you. Today, we're checking out Vampire Therapist on Steam.
Vampire Therapist is a graphic novel-like game where you play the role of Sam, an American Cowboy who happens to be a vampire. However, Sam doesn't like the old school way vampires behave/act and he wants to do something about it. That something is helping his fellow blood suckers change their ways for the better but he doesn't know how to do that. Sam goes to the worst place to get help, the Internet, and gets in contact with a vampire in Europe, Andromachos. Andromachos feels that Sam is coming from a good place and wants to help him with his cause. The way to do that is through the power of therapy! He heads to Andromachos's bar for training in the therapeutic arts!
The writing in Vampire Therapist is really fun. I love the idea of Sam being an retro cowboy who doesn't really understand modernity too much but does his best. I think I really like the interactions between Sam and the young vampires at the bar, who really, really want to get to know Sam better. So much so that they eventually let Sam partake in their aged wine, I mean blood. Having a vampire suck blood through a small mini game is an interesting idea.
Vampire Therapist went to a lot of trouble to get the technical terms of therapy right. I didn't study therapy/psychology in college so it was nice to have examples made simple. What I mean by that is you learn as Sam does. Andy(Sam has trouble saying Andromachos) knows that Sam is trying and wants to make it easy for him to learn. The game had real therapists put their two cents in and you really felt like you were a licensed therapist helping a patient. It just so happens that said patient is a vampire. Being able to look back on your notes when study as well as during a session was helpful too. I have never been to therapy but if I ever need to, I want a to see Sam, the Cowboy vampire therapist!
I was having a slight performance issue with Vampire Therapist where it had trouble loading scene transitions with the curtain dropping on the scene. If the only negative thing I have to say about Vampire Therapist is slight performance issues, then the game is in good hands. I'd like to thank the devs for the Steam code.
