The tech genius discusses the advances of smartphones and tablets and the opportunities for Unreal Engine 3.
The ability for new Tegra devices to connect to big screen TVs and the connected capabilities that allow smartphones to serve as controllers is quickly changing the concept of what a console experience is.
“It’s great that we’re decoupling our output devices from our input devices and people are using their tablet to control a game that’s displaying on your TV, but you seldom see a device like that replace other devices that have benefits of their own,” said Sweeney. “I don’t see tablet gaming that’s tethered to your television replacing Xbox or PlayStation gaming in the future. Your iPad is great, but it’s limited to consuming 10 watts of power and you can build a game console that consumes 100 watts and has graphics that are 10 and 20 times better. With the stratification that exists in the market with different platforms for serious personal computing versus serious television gaming versus mobile gaming, I think we have at least another ten years of separation there before se see them come anywhere close to converging on a common completely ubiquitous universal media.”
But the future of gaming – and entertainment – is heading towards a mobile, connected world. Two of the big games from NVIDIA’s CES 2013 press conference were Meteor Entertainment’s HAWKEN and Vivid Games’ Real Boxing, both Unreal Engine 3 games that will be playable on Project SHIELD using NVIDIA Grid technology.
