This new game's got problems, but also introduces Sonic's most innovative stuff to date for this generation.
Sonic can also use Colors abilities to boost ahead in a level and earn a few more rings, which is cool if you liked the original Wii game. He can also run along walls, ala Prince of Persia, which is useful when you don't have a floor to rely on. Again, it's not a perfect technique – more tweaking would've been nice – but when it clicks, it's really something.
Each stage also offers items to collect to unlock new and bonus stages, including red coins and animals trapped inside those pestering robots. Some levels require you to collect enough to unlock them later on in the game – a mild annoyance, but we're pretty sure you'll find enough favorite levels to tackle again to get the job done.
Had Sonic: Lost World gotten a little more work in the gameplay department, it could easily be the equivalent of Mario Galaxy for the Wii U – you know, until the franchise eventually shows up anyway. As it stands, though, it's still better than I expected, though hardly the quintessential adventure in the Sonic series. If you can get over a few speed bumps, you'll cruise along just fine with this one.
If not…hey, there's always Sonic Unleashed. Blech.
