Hardcore fans will welcome the new challenges, but rookies will be left hanging out to dry.
At least the gameplay is sufficient. Armored Core V: Verdict Day delivers a strong control style that's part sim, part arcade, and a lot of fun. While the objectives don't change much, the weapons still work quite effectively, and you can unlock some new ones that really open that can of whoop-ass. The defensive techniques are good too, especially the rocket dodges, which operate like clockwork.
Parts of Verdict Day work so fundamentally well, it's frustrating when the other parts can't keep up. Fans of the series will no doubt return for more fighting, and get it through strong multiplayer and team support options. However, those of you trying to get into the series will still feel like you just can't get into the "cool robot club," due to all the settings and the ridiculously technical menus. Maybe one day From Software will make a game in the series that just says, "Hey, everyone's welcome."
But then again, it is From Software, so don't expect it soon…if at all.
