Hardcore fans will welcome the new challenges, but rookies will be left hanging out to dry.
Not everything has to be on your own, though. Verdict Day comes with robust multiplayer, where you can team up with fellow players for more in-depth objectives, like capturing points and destroying even larger enemies. It's invigorating to see the multiplayer blends almost seamlessly with single, giving devoted fans a lot to do. Those of you who make it through the game's main campaign can also unlock a new Hardcore Mode, where you can really grind your gears for the ideal robot.
Unfortunately, not all the components run that smoothly. The story is lame, mostly consisting of puffy flabbergast that never gets off the ground. Worse yet, most of the story missions are the same, with "destroy this guy" followed by "hey, destroy his friends, too". Some people may like that, but it's this monotony that may throw some players off. What I wouldn't give for a solid escort mission…
In addition, the presentation leaves a little bit to be desired. The graphics, while consistent, are also quite muddy, with very few differences between the battlefields. The canyon battles are probably the most fun, mainly because you can't see what enemies are around the corner until it's almost too late to counteract. These tense moments make up for otherwise bland open-field battles. Some fans won't mind, especially when it comes to the good explosions featured in the game, but the series has been going for some time here. Variety would've been great this time around.
