This epic 3DS adventure is a must for those looking for a challenging role-playing adventure.
Either way you go, there's a compelling story that unfolds here, based around your choices. What's more, you can take on various challenge quests and Demon's Domain rooms, adding to the replay value. We've gone through about 15 hours of the game and still feel like we've barely scratched the surface. That's when you know you're in for an extravagant adventure.
That said, it could've done a bit more visually. Soul Hackers, the last Atlus RPG treat for the 3DS, offered more visual oomph than this game does, though some of the 3D effects and cut-scenes are kind of cool to watch. Some polish would've been nice in spots, and maybe more effects to show decision making wearing down your character would've been ideal. Still, not bad.
Shin Megami Tensei IV's music sounds very good, but can't quite come close to some of the better RPG tunes I've come across recently. Could've been a lot worse though. Full voice acting is also supplied for each of the characters, but you can skip past them if they sound too cornball for you.
One more thing – if you are going to get the game, feel free to plunk down the extra $15 and go for the limited edition box set. You'll get some goods with it, including a 176-page strategy and design book, a music collection CD, and a neat little slipcase.
Graphical issues and some stuff with the battle system keep me from giving this game a perfect rating. But at least Atlus offers something of extravagance with Shin Megami Tensei IV, offering a casual experience for newcomers to enjoy and the hardcore element that dedicated players won't get enough of. Even those who aren't too crazy about RPG's may feel the need to see how things fare in this demon-filled world. Who knows? The decisions just might change you.
