Town exploration and building has never been this in-depth – or, for that matter, enjoyable.
While the game doesn't break any new boundaries visually, it does look the Animal Crossing part, and takes enough advantage of the 3DS to appear unique. The characters are fun to get into conversations with, and the way your town shows growth over a short period of time is stunning. The sound is about on par as well, with music and sound effects that don't deter from the Animal Crossing experience, but rather embrace it.
Where the game truly shines is with its sharing support, through the Nintendo Network. Not only can you join in with friends for quick mini-game match-ups, but you can also visit the Happy Home Showcase, where you can check out other friends' towns via StreetPass – and put up your own for display as well. Dream Suite also allows you to see towns from all over the world, and it's interesting to see what other people have come up with. We've only seen bits and pieces of it since the game hasn't gone completely live yet (it does launch this Sunday), but thus far, it's setting up for something big with the Animal Crossing community.
No, Animal Crossing: New Leaf doesn't quite reinvent the wheel, but it certainly keeps it spinning with the ability to flourish your city and its inhabitants however you please, while having fun in it all the same. The presentation is pleasant, and the online/sharing features are unparalleled, whether you're looking for a quick romp or an investment in other people's city structures. It's one of the best games you'll play this year – which is more than I can say for SimCity.
