Get ready for the best Superman movie in years.
However, the other characters could've used better establishment. Adams makes a fine Lane, even though she puts herself in peril way too often, and her "chance" meeting with Supes is just a wee bit coincidental. Lane is okay as Clark's Earth mother, but is given barely little more than to be his emotional push. And Laurence Fishburne would've made a better Perry White with just a bit more conviction. It's not bad – and he has a decent rescue role later on in the film – but I would've liked to have seen more of his attitude here.
The movie breezes along just like a good summer movie should. When Shannon reveals his true intentions for Earth and puts them into action, it introduces some sensational action that really pieces together quite nicely. And the final battle between Supes and Zod is something to be seen, even if it does go overkill into visual effects at times. (And yes, there is a "don't blink or you'll miss it" nod to Batman in there.) Hans Zimmer's soundtrack also goes a long way into lending some precedence, even though the original Superman theme is nowhere to be found. No matter -- this is a whole new ride anyway.
I still consider Superman II the best movie when it comes to the representation of the hero in movies, just because I'm nostalgic that way. But Man of Steel does an outstanding job of giving a fresh perspective on the hero. It's a bit visceral, and some moments will leave you scratching your head (like Supes going from hairy beard to clean shaven with no explanation), but Snyder and his team have delivered a very good summer entertainment. Unlike Bryan Singer's overpriced attempt in 2006, this Superman soars.
