Visual hiccups and a lack of weaponry keep this from being the series' cream of the crop.

After last year's ridiculously hyper-energetic Resident Evil 6 (and that's being kind), fans have been clamoring for any sort of return to what made the survival horror series great in the first place – and by that, we mean the actual survival horror.  Well, it looks like Capcom was actually listening, because it's ported over the wonderful 3DS game Revelations in a new high-def format for consoles, and it's out now.  It's hardly what you'd consider a quintessential port, but for some fans, it'll be more than efficient for summer scares.

The game follows Jill Valentine and her partner Parker Luciani (and, on occasion, the oft-suffering Chris Redfield), as they battle their way aboard a cruise ship called the Queen Zenobia.  A bioterrorist threat has been labeled somewhere on the ship, but in actuality, it's already taken effect, as a number of human/sea creatures are lurching about, creating a nightmare for anyone who gets in their path.  You'll see right from the start just what you're up against, as you're forced to do battle with some freaky looking whale thing as it tries to bite your head off – unless you're quick enough to empty a few bullets into it, obviously.

The new setting and creatures take a much different path from the usual one we strayed with RE6 last year, and it's a refreshing new take.  Sure, some areas of the ship may be limiting, and you'll have to do backtracking in order to find everything needed to survive certain encounters, but it's still good to see Capcom considering some new ideas that stick with the Resident Evil series.  The small hallways definitely set up room for tension, as you don't have much space to dodge when it comes to a group of incoming enemies.
