This spin-off is a bizarre piece of the future from the past. Confused? Just play it and enjoy.
There is a story here, but it's told in perfect 80's style. You play Mark IV Cyber Commando Rex Colt, who's been called in to take out a military group that's gone mercenary on their post. Of course, being a devoted (if a bit foul-mouthed) military man, you simply can't believe that they would do this. But once you know the truth, all bets are off as you lay waste to whatever armies they throw at you. Because that's the Rex Colt way, don't you know.
The gameplay stays true to the formula of Far Cry 3, with plenty of story and secondary missions to complete, even if they're something as simple as hunting down exotic animals with a specific weapon (ever hunt down a vicious ostrich with a sniper rifle?) or "rescuing the geek" from harm's way. It's cool running around and taking out enemy patrols, or successfully using "cyber hearts" (which you rip out of the chests of enemies) to lure the laser-breathing dragons against your adversaries. And some of the more powerful weapons are a joy to use in the game, particularly a turret cannon, which can deal a whole lot of damage to boats filled with robot soldiers. Boom!
Stealth takedowns have been improved a bit as well. Like Far Cry 3, you can sneak up on unsuspecting foes by distracting them with a roll of the dice (literally) and then killing them from behind. You can also chain together kills stylishly enough, if they're close by, and build yourself a combo. Some kills come easier than others, but once you get the hang of the system, it's outstanding. The rest of the stealth elements are pretty forgettable, save for sneaking past the Blood Dragons when they're sniffing about.
Though Blood Dragon doesn't have the same level-up system as the original, you are given prompt rewards for each mission you complete, which help Colt become an even more powerful character as the game goes on. This is a huge plus, along with being able to upgrade your weapons to maximum effect.
