Alien Spidy spins its web onto consoles but is it worth the download? Find out in our review!
The gameplay in Alien Spidey is easy, simple, and painstakingly frustrating all at the same time. After playing through the training levels, I thought that this would be the type of laid-back gameplay that provides a break from the more violent and involved games of the world. The point system is refreshing. You gain points as you collect items, yet the longer it takes to finish the level or the more times you respwan, you begin to loose points. This should create a furious dash to the finish line, but instead you will find yourself respawing after being hit by a rolling insect or a drop of water. The more that I was forced to respawn and loose my points, the less I wanted to play. Challenges in games should make the gamer want to conquer, not hit the power button. There seemed to be a delay in the controls when I played the game and trying to direct a web shooter to go where I wanted was to frustrating to want to try again.
While frustrating gameplay holds it back, the environments are great.
Alien Spidy has some positive attributes. It immediately allows you root for an alien insect on Earth and the art style is unique. The gameplay however is frustrating and difficult to get over. While some part of me really wanted to like this game, I found myself battling frustrating bits of arachnophobia when being forced to respawn over and over again. Enigma Studio’s latest effort is worth the demo, but not worth the download.
