Check out this action platformer starring an aardvark.
It’s that time again when we get to leave the GamerFudge headquarters, aka my house, and get some hands-on time with interesting can fun games. PAX East is later in the year this year and it’s always nice to not have to travel to Boston in the Winter. First up was a game that I heard about a few days before PAX East even started. It was a game from Cubicorn Games called Super Cucumber. It looked like a game that I would like as it appears to be heavy on the action platforming.
Lucky for me, I was able to swing by the Cubicorn Games booth and check out Super Cucumber. It’s an early build of the game but the charm is already showing. The platforming reminded me a lot of Mega Man X. I say that because during the demo, there was a lot of wall climbing and dashing/air dashing over obstacles. You also needed to dash/air dash to maneuver through certain areas. In games like this, it’s always fun for more during the hands-on session to try to make moves players don’t normally make.
There were secret doors that led to secret locations that were just open locations because it’s an early build and the devs didn’t expect anyone to find most of them. The boss encounters were fun too. We fought an earthworm who was trying to set Cucumber on fire. We returned the favor by using attacks to set the ladder the worm was sitting on ablaze and win. The other fight was a battle against a shark who used time bombs to attack Super Cucumber. Prior to this fight we learned the air dash move and used that to our advantage. It was a walk in the park, I mean a swim in the park, taking the shark down a peg.
There were slight moments where the controls were a little finicky. What I mean by that is there were times when I tried to make a precise jump/wall climb, I hit a spike or cactus. It is an early build of the game so I will chalk it up to that. I also like playing early builds because not too many people have seen levels. The developer told me that the final section of the demo was played by himself and his wife. You can add my name to that list of people who played the final section/levels of the Super Cucumber demo. It is a fun game/concept when perfected looks to be a solid action platformer and a game I’m looking forward to seeing.
