Relive some classic video game moments in the Super Mario Franchise
Now for 2 side Mario games in the SNES era, Super Mario Kart and Super Mario RPG. Mario Kart for the SNES started my love for Mario Kart games and one of my favorite characters, the Koopa Troopa. If I wasn’t driving as Mario, I was playing as my boy, the Koopa Troopa. He was fast and his victory theme sounded like “look at me, I don’t care that I’m better than you.” As for Mario RPG, the game has everything I like. It has Mario. It has great music. It has great characters. It has a good story and it has Mario and Bowser teaming up. At the time, that was unheard of and now that’s kind of the norm. Man, how times have changed.
I got the Nintendo 64 for Christmas and received Mario 64 with it and Mario 64 pretty much explains itself. The game was revolutionary in what it did for 3D gaming. It also paved the way for other characters to take on the environment-explore game and succeed. Super Mario Sunshine for the Game Cube was a birthday gift and I got the beach towel Toys R Us gave out with it and it was worth the wait. The game came out during the Mario Brother gimmick period where Luigi had the Poltergust ghost vacuum and now Mario had the FLUDD water gun. The game is looked down at by Mario fans but I must be in the other corner because I think it’s a really good game.
Now for the more recent memories pertaining to Mario games. Similar to the iconic battles my brother and I had playing NHL 94; Mario Soccer was just as intense. We should have played these games in a padded room so we could throw whatever we wanted after we got screwed over at the last minute.
That also reminds me of my freshman year in college or Mario Kart Double Dash University. My suite would play Mario Kart Double Dash all the time and I still remember the time I smacked a controller on my foot and broke it. It was all that pent up anger from leading in Baby Park the whole race and then getting hit with a blue shell to not only lose, but not even make top 3. Things like that would get me so pissed. I had been waiting for Mario Hockey for years and with the Mario and Sonic games, I finally got what I wanted but it wasn’t perfect until Mario Sports Mix. Being a big hockey fan I loved the addition of hockey to the Mario universe.
To conclude, some of my favorite video game memories contain Nintendo’s go to guy, Mario. If it wasn’t playing with the family, it was racing with friends. I probably have Mario games to thank for my love of Nintendo and video game music. That’s gonna do it for another installment of A Look Back.
