My hands on with Disney Infinity

As day two of the Electronics and Entertainment Expo came to a close, I was scheduled for a hands on demo with the guys over at Disney and their baby Disney Infinity. I had heard good things about the game but I didn’t really know what to expect. I haven’t played a Skylanders game and Infinity is basically made in the shadow of Skylanders. However, I went in with an open mind and the game didn’t disappoint.

I started my session by getting the ground rules of the game and the controls, the usual stuff when you’re going to play a game you don’t know too much about. Infinity has two modes: the regular mode where you complete missions and play within the play sets and Toy Box mode, where you can do whatever you like and with what ever characters you like.

The starter pack comes with a certain set of character toys and the pad that allows the player to transport the characters into the game. In Play Set mode, the game won’t allow different characters to play in different worlds. For example, in Play Set mode, the game will not allow Mr. Incredible to play in Radiator Springs.

In Toy Box mode, that’s a different story. Players will be able to create their own teams of Disney fan favorites and go nuts. When more play sets and toys are available, you could have Buzz Lightyear and the Lone Ranger teaming up with Perry the Platypus. (These are just examples, I have no idea if there will ever be a Perry the Platypus toy released)

There will be world specific missions to complete. What I mean by that is there will certain missions that can only be completed by someone from that world. Lightning McQueen and other characters can only complete Radiator Springs missions/quests. You also have the option of customizing your “toy” to help complete missions. You might need to equip Lightning McQueen with giant wheels to help him tow a car up a mountain or something like that. When you find something in the Play Set mode like wheels or building materials, you’ll have the option to use them in the toy box mode.
