Real GEX Appeal!
It's that time again for a new episode of Chichuki Plays, the show where I go hands-on with upcoming games and show them off. Usually it's about an hour or so but I don't want to spoil too much of the game for you. This time, we're looking at the GEX Trilogy on PlayStation 5. You know what time it is? It's Tail Time!
I missed out on GEX when I was younger and I'm sure a lot of other people did as well. If you grew up in the late 80s/early 90s, then you understand what GEX is all about. A no nonsense gecko who shouts out pop culture one liners one after the other. Some of the one liners could be considered offensive by today's standards but weren't back then. It's nice to see games from the slight past brought back the way they were and not altered or changed too much.
The GEX Trilogy has GEX, GEX: Enter the Gecko, and GEX: Deep Cover Gecko. The first game was a platforming game and the next two took the jump the 3D. Most of the hands-on video I shot took place in the first game. I wanted to play the first world in the game/media dimension and show it off. I have seen people play the 3D games but I didn't know much about the original GEX, thus another reason why there is a lot of GEX footage. GEX is a very tough platformer but I think a lot of that is a product of the time it was created. There are lot of instant death traps, blind jumps, and awful hitboxes in the game. The game knows that it's pretty tough because they give you a lot of power ups and health items to keep you alive.
You have to find remote controls in each stage, similar to Mario 64 star pieces. The original GEX has you hunt them down in platforming levels and the 3D games rewards you with the remotes after finishing tasks. GEX: Enter The Gecko suffers from a terrible camera and control scheme that makes simple tasks tough to perform. It wouldn't be an old school PS1 game if it didn't have so-so controls and awful camera. Just to show I'm not killing Sony on this, the Nintendo 64 had some terrible camera games too. I think my favorite game in the trilogy was GEX: Deep Cover Gecko because the controls felt much tighter and more responsive. You were tasked with saving Special Agent Extra of the TV terrorist defense unit from Rez's clutches in the Media dimension.
The collection has a lot of extras included. I always like when collections like this have early concept art for the games. Well not only does the GEX Trilogy have that, it has early concept video of levels and much more. You can also listen to soundtracks for all three games and see new artwork made for the GEX Trilogy. You can also save during each game in one of three save files. One thing I thought was weird was you needed to push the right control stick of the PS5 down to get into the menu during gameplay and in my opinion, that's a little strange. People have been wanting GEX back for a long time and they finally got their wish.
