See what Whitethorn Games has with Slime Heroes
There are certain booths that you remember how they looked during PAX East. Whitethorn Games had a nice booth with white shag carpeting, fake trees and comfy areas to play demos. The shag carpet was a little slick but it’s always nice to see booths that put the time in to be fun and charming. There were quite a few games at the booth but there was one that I wanted to see, Slime Heroes.
Slime Heroes is a cute adventure game where you will need to think on your feet to figure out interesting puzzles/quests. It has a metroidvania aspect to it because you might not have the proper ability or weapon you need for progression. You’re mission is to save the ancient guardians from the vile corruption taking over the world.
Slime Heroes allows you to play your way. What I mean by that is it gives you the option to set up your attacks/abilities your way. You can sent them to the controller buttons you want to. You can also customize your slime to look the way you want it to. You can change the main color as well as the outline color of your slime. You can also change the eyes and mouth of your friendly slime creature. You’ll also be able to collect gems and use them for more customization as well as currency to buy more stuff.
One of the cooler features in the game is that you can find weapons to equip to your slime during the game. The slime will use that weapon but it will be slime-like. For example during the demo, I had a sword equipped but it turned into a slime sword. You can also ground pound and the slime changed shape during that too. It reminded me of Kirby Superstar Ultra on Super Nintendo where Stone Kirby changed into different statues when using the stone ability. You will also need to keep an eye out for hidden passageways and dungeons because you never know what you’ll find.
I mentioned earlier that you can use different attacks/abilities during your journey. You can power them up by using a main attack and a sub attack. What that means is that you can have a fire attack as a main attack and a wind attack as a sub attack. It might look like a fire tornado but this feature adds another layer of customization.
During the demo we found our way to a secret chamber and it had an interesting puzzle inside. We had to use the wind power to hit all the targets and activate the entrance to the path. Puzzles like this remind me of Legend of Zelda dungeons. If Slime Heroes has a slight hint of Zelda exploration then it could be a really fun game. I have to say, getting to make my slime pretty much any color gives it that special charm already.
