A free-for-all Hockey game!
My last appointment at PAX East this year was at the Firestoke Games booth to check out Goons: Legends and Mayhem. This is a hockey game that is all about chaos and a free-for-all and it’s pretty fun. People who have been looking for that arcade-like hockey game might have found their answer with Goons: Legends and Mayhem.
There is a story mode but more on that later. The main event is the arcade-like hockey game that you can play with a lot of people. You could play 2 on 2 or 3 on 3 matches where you control one skater. That skater could be one of three classes of character, Sharpshooter, Enforcer, or Wingman. Each type has their own abilities and traits that will give you the advantage in the game. You also have the option to pick from one of eight different characters. You can play the game with friends in the same room or play online with random people. It probably would be more fun to play with friends in the same room but playing online with tons of people sounds like a blast too.
That being said, you could play on a regular hockey rink or like on the demo, you could play on a Viking ship. The Viking ship is half court and all you have to do before scoring is clear possession behind the half court line.Another thing you’ll have to worry about is the goalie. The goalie will be out to get you and keep you from scoring too. In the story mode, the goalies are bosses that will get in your way. You will have to use your skills to get past them.
You’re trying to save the Hockeyverse, that’s the story in Goons. Keep the Great Mascoteer from ruining Hockey for everyone, a worthy cause. Along the way in story mode, you will interact with all kinds of characters from the Hockeyverse and learn all kinds of Hockey skills. From shooting and power skating, you will need to use all your skills to save the Hockeyverse. I played some of the story mode during the demo and it felt like an early build of the mode, which isn’t a bad thing. The Zamboni boss fight at the end of the demo was pretty cool as it was trying to teach you about shot selection.
The story mode of Goons is nice but you’re here to play crazy Hockey games with a ton of your friends and it does that. Teaming up for 3 on 3 or 2 on 2 matches will be fun and give you bragging rights among your friends.
