Check out an interesting game from Shueisha Games.
The Penny Arcade Expo has all genres of games covered, as there is something for everyone. I was able to schedule time at the Shueisha Games booth to check out some of their games. The game that left the biggest impression on me was Arcana of Paradise-The Tower. It is a real-time roguelike game with card game elements. You’re tasked with helping children explore the tower and make their way down to the bottom to help their survival. That being said, there are 20 playable kids and each child has their own set of cards they start with.
You will have to think quickly as battles come at you quickly in this game. You’ll be able to execute combo attacks as well as combo defends as well. Playing the right defensive card at the right time will allow you to put the enemy attacker in a daze and allow you to get the upper hand. I found during the demo that the best defense was a good offense where my party would attack together to get the attack combo. Whereas for defense, you need to time your defends just right and that was a little tricky. After you learn the defend timing, it becomes a lot easier to stun the enemy.
Before you descend, you’ll have to form a team of two children that will make their way into the tower. The children earn traits and upgrades after each successful run so getting the strongest pairing will add to the replay factor of the game. You might get a bad hand of cards but it’s easy to reset as you can re-deal your hand. That might be the break you need to win a tough battle. After each battle, you’ll be able to get your hands on new cards for your deck.
Having a successful journey through the tower is only half the battle. You will have to decide of your party needs a change or if new cards are needed for your deck.During the demo, the monster fights never felt too powerful and I never felt the game was trying to pull a fast one on me. That being said, making wise choices like what path to take in the tower will be important as well.
Graphically, the game looks great and I’m looking forward to seeing the full version of the game.
