Check out my hands on session with Power Chord!
PAX East is all about independent developers getting their chance to show off their projects to people who might not have a chance to see them otherwise. I was able to sit down with Big Blue Bubble to see their game Power Chord. If you’re a fan of hard rock music, then this will be perfect for you.
Let me start out by restating fans of hard rock music will want to check out Power Chord. That being said, roguelite fans will want to give this a look too. You play the role of the hard rock band making there way from gig to gig. As you progress, you’ll have the option to get new cards and make adjustments to your deck. Your deck is the way you attack other bands that you’ll come across during your “tour.” There are different types of musicians that you can use during battles. You can put a drummer in your band as well as a bassist.
However, the different cards you play will be key for survival. You can play cards that grant shields to your band that will keep they safe from attacks. Another element is anger damage, an attack add-on. You’ll be able to give different band members anger damage and the more anger damage you have, the more add on damage your attacks will do. You’ll have to be on guard, as you don’t want any of your band mates to fall in battle. If that happens you’ll have to find a rest stop along the way to revive them.
Different cards do different things and it will be up to you to discover which cards you like to play with. You’ll find different stops along the journey and that could range from battles to shops. In the shops, you’ll be able to purchase different cards and those cards could be the difference between winning and losing in battle. You can also cast cards that have added effects similar to poison damage.
The game has that Tales from the Borderlands look to it and that fits perfectly for the darker style it’s going for. Over the top looking characters fighting against monsters playing musical instruments sounds awesome to me. There was a two-headed boss monster and my band took him down pretty easily so it’s safe to say, I know how to create a band! Power Chord is an interesting premise and I can’t want to see what the final game looks like!
