Dinosaurs fighting aliens, yes please!

At Pax East, you get all kinds of people walking through the halls of the Boston Convention Center and you get all kinds of interesting games to see. That’s the category where Roarr! The Adventures Of Rampage Rex comes in.

Aliens invade the planet and the human race couldn’t do too much to stop it. However, the invasion had an unexpected side effect, it woke Rex up from hibernation. Now I don’t know about you but dinosaurs fighting aliens sounds like a great time to me! It seemed like the recurring theme for games at Pax East this year were different takes on old school beat-em-ups/brawlers, which isn’t a bad thing and Rampage Rex falls into that category.

The alien invasion will come at you fast/relentless but you’ll have simple combo attacks at your disposal to learn/master. During the demo I got the feeling that the game was going to be a button masher type of game but most of the old school brawlers were. If done properly there is nothing wrong with a game being a button masher and from what I was seeing, Rampage Rex looks on it’s way to be one of the done right button mash/combo games.

One of the issues during the demo was that enemy aliens were coming quickly and before you knew it, you went from full health and dead. I wasn’t the only one who found this as an issue because the developer of the game mentioned that other people had brought that up with him and it will be resolved for the full version of the game. Also mentioned but not in the demo was the idea of power ups that you could obtain for your dinosaur but there can be only so much in the demo.

The idea for the power up stems from attacking buildings as you will be rewarded for attacking your surroundings in the full version of the game such as attacking a power plant and getting some kind of power up from that. It will be very interesting to see what other types of power ups make it into the final version of the game based on the premise of attacking your surroundings, if that makes it into the final game at all.

There’s also different modes planned for the final version of the game such as survival mode, time trial mode as well as the main story mode. The main issue that could bump the release date is online co-op VS couch co-op. It’s planned to release summer of this year but could have early access but if the online co-op has issues, early access could get bumped/scraped and then the release could be moved. The controls felt fine and very responsive and the only real issue I felt was going from alive to dead fast with no real warning but the developers already know about it and plan to fix it. Only time will tell but the game is more fun with 2-4 players so get a group of friends together and go prehistoric on those aliens!
