Retro is the hip thing right now. Does the Res Plus follow suit?

I recently got my hands on a Res Plus from the folks at Retro-Bit. Retro-Bit is known for helping you play some of your favorite old-school video games in the modern world. This time around, the Res Plus allows you to play your favorite Nintendo games on a clearer, modern TV. For those of you, like me, who couldn’t get a NES Mini, this will be a viable solution so you can play all of your classic Nintendo games again!

Hooking up this system should have been a snap but it was anything but and one of the main reasons is that the box lies to you. What I mean by that is the box CLEARLY says it comes with an HDMI cable but when you crack open said box, there is no HDMI cable to be found. Luckily I had one lying around or I wouldn’t have been able to play it and I have been looking forward to playing the Res Plus for some time. You’ll have the option to hook it up through the AV connections or the HDMI connection but you might run into the issue with the HDMI cable I mentioned earlier.

The Res Plus has two controller ports in the front and comes with two red and black controllers. The system also works with the original Nintendo controllers but both sets of controllers feel smooth in your hand. The only minor issue with the Red and Black ones is that there is a slight delay in pushing buttons but that is so minor that it’s barely noticeable. The bigger issue is that you will need Superman strength to get the games out of the system. I needed to hold down on the console and then pull really hard to get the game out of the system and I’m hoping that the teeth will loosen up overtime/overuse.

Games look and play just like you remember they did. I played some Super Mario Brothers 2, Rad Racer, Adventure Island, and Galaga for the review and really enjoyed what I was able to play. To keep with nostalgia purposes, I only had to blow in two of the games and one time each. After that, they both worked perfectly and being able to play Nintendo games again is really any fan wants right?

To sum up, If you weren’t able to get your hands on a NES Mini or don’t feel like mortgaging your future/house to a scalper online for one, the Res Plus is a viable substitute. It has it’s flaws like the games need the jaws of life to be removed, the included controllers have minimal delay or the MAJOR one being a missing HDMI cable that is supposed to be included in the box. Classic fans just want to be able to play their favorite Nintendo games again and this is an easy way to do just that.

I’m giving the Res Plus from Retro-Bit an 8.5/10. I would like to that Retro-Bit for the review unit.

SCORE: 8.5/10
