The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is utilizing video games for serious research.

ACTUV submarine video game
Further, DARPA developed the Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) Continuous Trail Unmanned Vessel (ACTUV) video game, downloadable here, which allows gamers to control an unmanned, underwater vessel as it hunts for enemy submarines. After each round, players can opt to send their data to DARPA to inform future lines of defense against deep-water threats.
Beyond crowd-sourced research, DARPA is using video games to teach kids about STEM subjects, and inspire them to become future innovators in related fields. DARPA recently completed a prototype game, Refraction, to teach young students about fractions. InRefraction, players use a laser beam to power a space ship, re-routing and dividing the laser based on the needs of the target ship, offering kids a fun introduction to basic fraction concepts.
Video games are helping protect American interests at home and abroad. Each DARPA initiative highlights the varied roles video games can play to improve our society and the nation's defenses. DARPA is one of several government entities using games to further their missions.
