San Francisco Giants pitcher Ryan Vogelsong talks video games.

Ryan Vogelsong was instrumental in helping the San Francisco Giants win the 2012 World Series. The pitcher finished the regular season with a 14-9 record in 31 starts with a 3.37 ERA. The 2011 National League All-Star also worked with the ESRB to film a PSA on game ratings with teammate Buster Posey. Vogelsong talks about his own video game background in this exclusive interview.

What was it like getting involved with the ESRB PSA last year?

Yeah, man, it was pretty cool. It’s definitely a good thing to be a part of. I think the rating systems on these games are something that’s very important for parents to know about. Obviously, not every game that’s being made now is appropriate for children and I think it’s something that needs to be aware and the fact that it’s very easy to find out what the ratings are now makes it a lot better.

What games did you play growing up?

I was mostly a sports game guy, the football, the baseball, hockeys. I still do enjoy my video games. I have a young son right now so I’m not into it as much as I used to be, but he’s starting to get into them now, so we’re starting to play them a little bit more.

What are your thoughts about how far games have come since you were playing?

It’s pretty amazing how great these things are now. One of the things we’re doing now is my son’s playing Xbox Kinect a lot and it’s just pretty crazy to see that thing pick up your action with no remote control. It’s pretty fascinating considering my first game was the Atari 2600, so it’s really neat.
