It's missing that old-school charm, but it's a decent fill-in.
It should also be noted that A.R.E.S. packs plenty of challenging platforming segments as well. There will be times when you think you can make a jump with ease, but have to learn the timing just about perfectly to make it. It's one of those old-school type of challenges where your skills are put to the test – especially if you've got garbage raining down on you. It can be ridiculously tough at times, but dedicated players of the Mega Man saga will happily welcome the opportunity to conquer.
In addition to crazy level designs, A.R.E.S. also packs in tremendous bosses, whether it's a hop-crazy alien that likes shooting electrical bolts, or a massive technical unit that can't wait to pound you with lasers. Like classic bosses of old, they require a pattern to defeat, and it's fun figuring these out.
A.R.E.S. is a one-stop shop, a game you'll get through in a few hours with very little reason to return, outside of playing as another character. But it's a good time while it lasts, thanks to Origo Games' dedication to design. The graphics are good stuff, with plenty of atmospheric touches and varying enemies to blast. The 3D nouveau view takes a little getting used to, but it's not as bad as other platformers out there.
