Mediatonic's side-scrolling brawler puts a sweet twist on the beat-em-up genre.
The presentation is superb. The side-scrolling stage – which seems to go on forever, I might add – is well placed, and the action never slows down, nor makes you forget that it's an elaborate play, instead of actually being in Egypt or whatever. The animations are smooth, and the way Dashforth and Scampwick run about is actually rather humorous. Watch out for those straying actors, too. They're hilarious.
More could've done with the sound, like some extra voicework, but the vaudevillian theme and sound effects are just about right for a game of this nature.
Foul Play may not look like your type of brawling game – especially if you've been spoiled by Sacred Citadel or the awesome Charlie Murder – but give it a chance. You'll be happily rewarded with smooth combat, heightened moments of euphoria, and a jolly good show. We just wish this play had an extension. Sequel perhaps, old chap?
