The gameplay does reward you with bonus and unlockables. Playing through the Arcade mode unlocks new levels in Mission mode. Achieving certain milestones also unlocks two female characters, Ricci Erica and Sally Inohara, who can join in on the fun. The characters do have a twist on the weapons, but not enough to create a truly unique feel while playing. Other bonuses include weapons and power ups, but these items disappear when you die creating a frustrating problem.
Contra: Evolution, much like the recently release Metal Slug X, is a great trip down nostalgia lane. The game is just as fun as you remember. The graphics are a great mixture of classic and modern, and the game performs smoothly overall. Contra: Evolution however does not evolve as the name suggests. Frustrating controls and lack of new modes keeps this NES classic firmly planted in the past. If you are interested in taking a trip through familiar territory, then this is the game for you. If you are interested in a new experience with a familiar flare, then you will have to look else ware.
