China Girl and the Suspension of Disbelief showcase the process of brining the porcelain character to life. The makers of the film went through many ideas, but settled on using a puppet during filming to give the actors something to react to. The feature is great because it also showcases an almost forgotten art form. Sam Raimi decided to use a marionette puppet during filming in order for the character to evoke the emotion needed in every scene. Puppeteer Phillip Huber designed the marionette for the film and his work is amazing. After watching the feature, it almost seems a waste to make China Girl a CGI character. Joey King was also on set and in every scene voicing China Girl. Although, she did later record her lines for the film, having her on set was just a little detail that makes Sam Raimi a great director. Speaking of Raimi, keep your eye out for a Bruce Campbell cameo in the film.
The chemistry between these two is ok.
Oz The Great And Powerful is good popcorn flick. Sam Raimi’s direction is good and most of the visuals of Oz are fantastic. While the performance of James Franco as Oz is disappointing, Michelle Williams, Mila Kunis, Zach Braff, and Joey King make up for it in their supporting roles. The script seems rushed and it seems that Sam Raimi may have been forced to cut the film to meet the Disney runtime. The Blu-Ray release of the film boasts a great transfer of the visuals, but runs low on the special features. This is a definite rent, but not worth adding to your movie collection.
Will there be a sequel?
