Rookie players may be thrown off, but Codemasters once again comes through with (mostly) driving grace.
Though the in-game graphics aren't as smooth as its PC counterpart, GRiD 2 looks fine on consoles (namely the PS3, the version we're reviewing here). The frame rate is steady, the lighting effects impressive, and the car models dazzling, though we do miss the in-cockpit view – it's simply either "on the front of the car" or "behind the car" now. The audio is okay, though the in-car chatter can get old quickly. At least the dramatic music knows when to kick in at just the right time.
If you're a racing fan who prefers having a chance to win no matter what the odds, GRiD 2 may not be right for you. You might prefer something more arcade-based, like Burnout 3 or Split/Second, to sedate your "hey, I could win first by chance!" mood. But if it's a racing beast you're after, and one loaded with the kind of content – both single and multiplayer – to draw you in even further, GRiD 2 is well worth a trip behind the wheel.
Just, really…prepare yourself. This thing bites back.
