Great direction and a show-stealing performance from Benedict Cumberbatch make this a must-see for summer.
But, really, this is Abrams' baby, and he continues to direct with a solid flow – despite what some people, like said friend, may think otherwise. Sure, there are lens flares here and there, but the movie isn't nearly as overkill on them as the first time around, and it makes proper use of the 3D technology – at least, from what we could tell with some of the effects. You're still good seeing it in plain ol' 2D, though, so don't be afraid either way.
Aside from a couple of slight storytelling moments (and I do mean slight – some people won't even notice), Star Trek: Into Darkness is a wonderful sequel, one that just slightly pushes ahead of the original with excitement, laughs and solid performances all around. Cumberbatch deserves a great deal of credit too, adding some zest to an otherwise familiar role – one that may throw some fans for a loop if they don't see it coming. It's summertime movie viewing at its best, and really shouldn't be missed by anyone. Though, obviously, some people, like that friend, will want to hang on to the past.
Their call. But, man, are they missing something here.
