Additional characters such as Lyra, who uses a bow and arrow to target baddies, as well as Tyko and his chimp companion, a strange pair that combine the power of brute strength and cymbals spice things up, but too often they come in at the halfway point of a level where the music comes to an end and then has to start up again, which is almost criminal in a game all about the rhythm. It's interesting to play as these incidental characters though, even if it's just to have a brief reprieve from sprightly Tempo, who occasionally can grate on the nerves with his Munchkin-esque vocals.
For those who powe through the game some Pokemon-related surprises are in store as bonus levels, as well as the option to return to completed levels and play them with incrased speed, which does present a decent challenge, but not enough to keep the rest of the game from becoming a speed run.
HarmoKnight is a darling rhythm platformer with plenty of heart, but it's over way too quickly, with little in the way of surprises or challenge. GameFreak has a lot up its sleeve, but as far as a rhythm platformer, HarmoKnight is better left as a bargain buy.
