A new mode aimed at beginners, along with several touch-ups, make this one of Sony's best baseball games yet.
Then there's the commentary, which is still good, though sometimes the wording of Eric Karros and Matt Vasgersian can go off the grid a little bit, as if they have a hard time following the action. It's not a big deal, however, as the rest of the audio presentation makes up for it with superb crowd noise (just try to stand still in Coors Field during the playoffs) and classic baseball themes. Some of the contemporary soundtrack selections could've used some work, but as a whole, this game is perfect to test out your gaming headset. Like, say, the Sony Pulse Wireless…?
There are still bits and pieces of MLB The Show that need to get the kinks out for next year, mainly with player models and loading times – which can be strenuously long without the optional 10 GB install. But baseball fans – and yes, rookies, for once this includes you – will want to get into this with no hesitation. With loads of content to try out, a user-friendly Beginner Mode to introduce you to the basics, and the strongest presentation you'll ever see in a baseball game, MLB 13: The Show is nothing short of a grand slam.
