Mario and the fans agree, the first Mushroom Kingdom Wii U Adventure is a successful one.
The game also feels like Super Mario 3, which is my favorite Mario game by the way. The inventory screen is right out of Mario 3. The mid-level fortress stages are out of Mario 3. The enemy levels on the map, such as Hammer Brothers and Piranha Plants, screams Mario 3. The koopa kids being in the game (I know they were in NSMBWii) and their end-of-world battles gives the game that old school feel. NSMBU also feels like Mario 1, in the way the levels are designed as well as the flagpole at the end of each level. Now the game isn't just one big old school Mario love fest. It has several aspects that show Nintendo still has plenty to offer their fans.
Now, onto the new stuff. Power-ups have always played a role in Mario games. Back are returning favorites, the starman, fire flower, and mushroom. In is a new comer to the Mario universe, the Flying Squirrel suit. Players can become the flying squirrel if they collect the super acorn. The flying squirrel suit reminds me of the Hammer Brothers and Frog suits of Mario 3 fame. Another new aspect of NSMBU is Boost Mode. Boost Mode makes it possible to have up to five people playing at the same time. It's another example of how multiplayer games are taking over at Nintendo, and there's nothing wrong with that.
Boost Mode is the name Nintendo has giving the control scheme on the Game Pad. Players can assist their fellow players by creating platforms for them to jump on or to "boost" them up to reach out of reach things, like star coins. You can also use the Game Pad to play by yourself or you can do the same thing with a Wii-remote. If you jump on ten platforms with symbols on them, you will be able to get a boost star, similar to the starman but you will be able to kill enemies and break bricks by touching them. The main selling point of Boost mode, in my opinion, is that everyone can play at the same time.
