Kingston HyperX Savage USB 3.1 Flash Drive Review

Christmas came early this ear with the release of HyperX Savage USB 3.1 Flash Drives. Kingston is a front-runner when it comes to fast storage devices. Their newest product is the HyperX Savage USB 3.1 flash drive. It’s capable of a maximum transfer speed of 5 Gbps. USB 3.1 is USB 3.0 with SuperSpeed and is backward compatible with USB 3.0.

HyperX Savage Specification
* Comes in three capacities: 64 GB, 128GB, 256GB
* Dimensions of 76.3 mm x 23.48mm x 12.17mm
* Operating Temperature of 0°C to 60°C
* Storage Temperature of -20°C to 85°C
* Supports speed up to 350MB/s read and 250 MB/s write for 128/256 GB capacities, the 64 GB capacity comes with 350 MB/s read and 180 MB/s write
* Offers 5 years of warranty and 3 years free technical support
* Compatible with latest Windows 10, Windows 7, Windows 8, Mac OS and Linux
* The flash drives are backward compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 3.0

We tested the USB drive on the most popular gaming platforms, PC, Xbox One and PS4. When browsing media content stored on the flash drive, the content loaded quickly. The speed of HyperX Savage was most noticeable when we skimmed or jump ahead in large video files that were playing. We also saw a performance gain when browsing large 10 MB image files.

Gone are the days of playing games directly off a DVD. Every AAA title now requires an installation to the hard drive. The standard Xbox One hard drive is slow, only 5400 RPM. Fortunately, Xbox One allows gamers to expand the storage with an USB drive if it’s 256 GB or greater and uses USB 3.0.

With the 256GB HyperX Savage formatted to function as additional storage for the Xbox One you will see improvements in three key areas. There is less stutter, better load time, and improved frame rate. It’s not to say the issues completely went way just by switching to a faster storage device. But, by just cutting down the stuttering and improving the load times by a few seconds will make a world of difference in overall gameplay experience.

Kingston Technology continues to demonstrate that not all flash drives are the equal. If you hunger for more more speed and better performance, the HyperX Savage is the preferred solution.
