Get an idea of what the Deckbound booth at Pax East was all about!
I was able to get a tour of what the Deckbound team was showing off at Pax East this year and fans of the company won’t be disappointed. They appear to have something for everyone. I was able to play two games in the booth, Deckbound Spears and Deckbound Heroes. An interesting note is that cards can be used for all the games. What that means is that you can use your Heroes cards in Spears and level them up and vice versa.
Deckbound Spears is a fun multiplayer game that pits everyone against each other. Like I said earlier, you’ll be able to level up your Deckbound cards in Spears for other Deckbound games. Spears is a free-for-all game that has four players going at it, trying to kill each other will spears. Players’ play as animals and first player to ten kills wins. Sounds simple, right?
There’s more strategy to it than just throwing your spear and hoping for the best. You character is able to run and hide behind objects on the map such as trees or rocks. Like most multiplayer attack games like this, you can either play it safe and hide or you can go after the enemy. However, remember where your spear lands because you’ll have to retrieve it. I was able to play as an elephant and he throws the spear with his trunk and that’s pretty cool. It’s a fun free-to-play game that will be coming to PC, and mobile devices so be on the lookout for it.
Next up was the other game in the Deckbound booth, Deckbound Heroes. Heroes is a digital card-game that is part turn-base and part strategy. What you’re trying to do is bring your opponent’s health down to zero. How you do that is really up to you. You can occupy outposts on the map and that will give you more options in game. You can also use your offensive cards to attack your opponent directly to eventually bring their health to zero.
You’ll have the chance to play against the computer or real online opponents. Matches are a “best of three” format but if you win the first round your opponent might be in much better shape in round two by how many outposts they have occupied. That might make for a speedy second round. Maps have different graphics and have a different amount of outposts available to occupy so different maps have different strategies to play.
The game also has a deck builder feature that helps simplify the deck building process. You’ll be able to trade cards as well as lend cards to other people here. There is an interesting feature in the deck building mode and that is the Nomad Pool. This allows players to lend cards to other players to use and level up for you. Say you want to use the card but it doesn’t learn the ability you want until much later, you can lend it out in the Nomad Pool and let someone else do the work for you. That way someone who wants to use the card now can and then you get the XP for when you want to use it later!
The Curiosity Card class is the rarest set of cards in the game and these cards don’t have an effect on normal gameplay but will make an aesthetic change. Players who want to have something unique will want to get their hands on these special cards.
